Making your Goals a Reality....

"In life one must be strong, grounded and supportive yet supple enough to move freely with the winds of change"
Hi everyone,

I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to map out their goals for 2009, be they fitness,health,financial,relationship...all of the above perhaps. I hope too, that in mapping the course your year will take, that you have actioned where needed, those professionals that will assist in the goals becoming reality. Personal Trainers, dietitians, financial consultants or bank managers, friends and family. With all this activity happening around changing your outer world, who has taken a moment to contemplate/change the triggers of their inner world-the thoughts that create the actions and the drives that put them there in the first place?

For the majority of people the setting of goals and embarking on the first steps to make them happen is never the real problem, that is why so many gyms have such huge surges in memberships in January, by February the attending gym member numbers drop right off and by March they are back to their pre-Christmas statistics. So, all those strong resolutions suddenly don't seem that important come March. This is where we need to action the majority of the change so that your goals actually get achieved. We will look at how we resist change to keep stuck in our old patterns. Following posts will look at how we action change and work with it rather than create resistance to make the transition smooth to the new happier and healthier life you aspire to.

Patterns of Resistance:

We are creatures of habit, yes and anytime there is a need presented that involves change we will automatically resist. Resistance can come in many forms-

  • impatience is one form, being late to an appointment with your trainer another, siting injury/ pain or allergy as a reason for not completing a task, exercise, nutrition plan. Getting up and walking out of the room, reaching for the food or drink, creating/ending relationships...all of these are forms of resistance, your awareness of which has now been called to action.
From now pay close attention to when you feel uncomfortable and/or need to distract, argue, flee, a situation. Unless it is a physically threatening situation (I would suggest you run for your life here), you are probably resisting a change of some sort. We are often very good at explaining away and justifying the resistance to ourselves-

  • my case was different, the plan/diet/therapist/trainer just didn't work for me,no one understands, I'm just big boned, it's my genetics....the list is endless.

Delaying tactics, fear and denial are all ways we resist the necessary action required to bring the change to our lives-

  • i'll do it later, I have too much work on, I'm too busy, it's just the way I am, I'm not ready, they might judge me, there isn't enough money.....

Repeated Patterns show us where we need to put our attention to-

Every pattern of behaviour you exhibit will be there out of a necessity, because you deem it important. There is something in us that needs the fat, the bad relationship, the financial turmoil, the bitchy girlfriends......How many times have you set yourself the goal of loosing weight, giving up smoking, never choosing men that are bad for you, but only to revert back to your habitual behaviours and then blame a lack of willpower, lack of discipline and disgust at those who appear to successfully manage their goal achievement (jealousy).?

I have a secret to share with you......how successful you are in the goals you set for yourself has absolutely NOTHING to do with how much discipline or motivation you have. How successful you are is all about the importance you place on moving toward the goals and away from the behaviours that have prevented you from achieving them in the past. Example: People are not genetically predetermined to be fat, this is a lifestyle issue compounded by over eating and lack of exercise(unless you have a rare health issue such as problems with thyroid function or such), on the whole the majority of the population that is overweight got that way by choice. They therefore have the choice to get un-fat. Blaming relationships, parents, death, birth or any number of external factors will not change the fact that the choice lies within the individual to change thier lifestyle. Perhaps the more important issues is why are you choosing to remain fat, how is that working for you and what do you get out of it?

Understanding how you got to where you are today, the good and the bad, will give you clearer insight into your patterns of behaviour. Once you understand your behaviour and drives, you can better set strategies to avoid or manage yourself in the future until your new habits/behaviours become second nature. Remember too that any discomfort you feel, any resistance you exhibit in your thoughts or actions will probably mean you are on the right track, go with it and work the issue through, your future and success depends upon it.

Till next time, go get em!
